Michael C.Y. Lin is the Data and Research Manager at Downtown Santa Monica Inc. (DTSM). At DTSM, he analyzes data on foot traffic, hotel room and vacancy rates, parking, real estate rental and vacancy rates, sales tax, and workforce, and studies how these factors affect economic development in Downtown Santa Monica. He is also a Research Fellow conducting regional economic research at the Milken Institute.
Prior to joining DTSM, Dr. Lin was the Director at the Research & Analytics department, Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC), where he conducted research on regional competitiveness and industry analysis (e.g., autonomous/electric vehicles, semiconductor sectors) that facilitate business attraction and retention. He was the Associate Director and a Regional Economist at the Milken Institute, where he focused on evaluating urban and regional economic performance and exploring the determinants of their growth and decline. He was also involved in writing several policy reports on green buildings, sustainable community development, and informal housing. Dr. Lin published articles in Annals of Regional Science, and two book chapters in community planning and shrinking cities. He has also been participating in peer reviews for several academic journal articles.
In addition to being an urban economist, Dr. Lin also utilizes both econometric and machine learning methods in his research. He has been teaching data visualization, econometrics, and statistics using Python, R, SAS, SPSS, STATA, and Tableau at the University of Southern California (USC).
Dr. Lin holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture and a master’s degree in urban design, both from the National Taipei University of Technology in Taiwan. He also has a certificate in real estate with a concentration in investments from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Extension Program and a Ph.D. in policy, planning, and development with a specialization in urban development from USC.
